Sunderland is one step closer to survival after winning the Tyneside Derby 3-0 at St James Park. Fantastic goals from Stephane Sessegnon, Adam Johnson and David Vaughan sees Sunderland climb to 15th place in the table. Simon Mignolet had a great first half, making a few quality saves to deny Newcastle from equalizing.
Newcastle’s attempt to add more impetus going forward, by bringing on Shola Ameobi failed, as Sunderland found more gaps to attack on the counter. Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse looked to have levelled the score in the second half, but the linesman wrongfully ruled him offside. Newcastle fans received more bad news, as goalkeeper Tim Krul will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a dislocated shoulder. Unlike last week, Sunderland continued to play well in the second half, and they were rewarded with two wonder goals. It was a great result for Di Canio’s men, who picked up their first league win since January. The Black Cats look a different side under Di Canio, in terms of intensity, and Sessegnon has been one of many players that’s improved since his arrival. Although Di Canio didn’t start his tenure with a win against Chelsea last week, fans will certainly get behind him after this result and his entertaining touch-line celebrations.
“I enjoyed this a lot. I know how much this derby means to our fans & my players were warriors today.”
“I tried to run & celebrate, but I’m too old. I will lose all my money on new suits if we get 3pts every week.”
